I am going on a (financial) diet

I should probably go on an eating diet too but one step at a time!

What prompted the sudden "I must cut crap out of my life?" This:

That picture would be of the SIX outfits I ended up buying Lucas for Christmas. Not to mention the 12 small gifts I bought him AFTER I already bought him all his gifts so we could do a 24 days of Christmas tradition. Oh yah- I went overboard. So so so overboard! So it's time to start anew in 2015. Making a couple hundred dollar cuts to our budget and hopefully keeping our spending in control. Of course that's after we take one third of our Christmas money and wrap use some things we've been wanting to buy ;) it's all about baby steps right?

You know I'll keep you updated on how it goes!

Ugly Christmas Sweater

I know this is a week late in sharing but I just had to...

So last week I worked Monday and Tuesday. I knew I would be dressing down on Tueaday so I went full out cute (or at least what I think was cute). Not only did a student tell me she didn't like the side zipper on my shirt (in a series of barks no less) but I come to find out it's ugly sweater day. So one of the teachers was nice enough to loan me one of hers.

Apparently these were popular in the 90s....

Potato chip disappointment

I never thought I could be disappointed with a potato chip. Maybe because I love them so much that I avoid questionable ones so they don't fail me (here's looking at you Caramel Macchiato Lays). So I took my time before deciding to indulge in the chocolate covered potato chips. One of my favorite bloggers have them a rave review which was the final push I needed.

I should have known when the two old ladies in front of the stand were saying that for $4 a bag they could make their own and a lot more of them. But I shoved.... Politely knocked.... Signed impatiently and waited until they moved... those old ladies out of the way and proudly grabbed my bag.

It looked so glamorous. No way r could disappoint. I started to get suspicious when I opened the bag.

Um excuse me bag packer? I think you forgot half my chips.

But I was willing to overlook this because clearly these chips are like caviar- pay a lot of money to savor a little amount. So I slowly took my first bite and.....

Yup. You read the title of this post. Big stinking disapppointment. I didn't even eat half of that miserable amount.

Life lesson: Avoid the hype and stick to chips and dip.

Comeback

I know it's been awhile.  And it's been even longer because I was waiting for the time to sit down and write this long, drawnout post about why it's been such awhile.  But then I realized that no one really needs those details- it was my work, my husband's work, Lucas, a combination of all three and none of the above and just life in general getting in the way.  I also felt pressure that any post that I made should be BIG-- repin on Pinterest big, recommend to your friends big... but then I realized that I made this blog to share with you the "OMGs" of my own life and my own daily random musings.  So that's what you're going to get.  Daily, twice a day, once a week, whatever I feel.  I hope you enjoy it :)

Fighting the Winter Itch

I know that the weather is still unseasonally (is this a real word?) warm but I am definitely feeling the effects of fall. The only thing I like about fall is heavy sweaters, pumpkin EVERYTHING, and the colors.  The colds, the allergies, and the dryness it brings could leave something to be desired.  Not only do I get bloody noses (poor Lucas lost a burp cloth the other day when it was the only thing in reach to stop the blood from dripping on both of us), but my skin also gets really dry in the winter.

So I was VERY excited the other day when I got my Vox Box from Influenster.  I had honestly forgotten that I joined the Vaseline campaign and I got a full bottle of their new Advanced Repair Intensive Care Lotion.

My grandma used Vaseline and so the sight of the bottle always brings back a nice memory.  This one is fragrance free so I don't have the smell to remember Grandma by, but it's good for work because I hate having heavy scents on me when working in the school.  It also came at the perfect time because lotion was on my to buy list.

According to the description, this lotion is clinically proven to heal very dry skin in 5 days.  I used it on my feet tonight because they were feeling dry and they already feel 100 times better.  The texture is nice and smooth and not greasy.. there is nothing worse than putting on lotion and then not being able to touch anything for 5 minutes afterwards.

If you are in the market for a new lotion for your dry skin, I definitely recommend this one!

Note:  I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.  All opinions are my own.

This is Why I Don't Bake...

So much to the surprise of my mother, I seem to have mastered the whole cooking thing for the most part.

Meatball Sub Casserole ?  No problem!  Easy, yummy and delicious with plenty of leftovers.

Crockpot Chicken and Stuffing ?  Going to make it all the time-- again, easy, yummy, with plenty of leftovers!

Pumpkin Cake with Apple Cider Glaze...  DISASTER!  I had to make a dessert for our church's soup supper and last year my husband made fun of me because I made a boxed cake.  So I decided that this year I was going to make an original recipe.  Thankfully I decided to make a "practice" one because my first one turned out like this....

Note to self:  SPRAY THE PAN!

This was not a hard recipe and it was DELICIOUS but oh my goodness... thankfully the one I took to church turned out a little better.

Next time I am going to buy cookies and put them on a plate- these are pretty delicious if you see them.

Save your money on these goldfish...,

The Budget

I can't believe that I haven't posted in October yet.  Between the baby teething, me getting a stomach bug, and trying to get through a lot of CRAP at work, I can barely formulate sentences during the day let alone put anything together anyone would care about reading (Random side note- can I do that on a good day? Ha!)  But I am slowly recovering, catching up, and getting used to functioning on 6 interrupted hours of sleep each night so here it is....

One of the most important things we found when we started to do the "Dave Ramsey" plan was to take a look at our budget and actually stick to it.  We've made some tweaks along the way but for the most part, our monthly budget remains mostly the same.  Some things I'm not proud of lately is that we added a cleaning lady at $40 a week but the stress relief (and decrease in fights between my husband and I) it has added to our lives is definitely worth the few months it will put off being debt free.  AND we paid off another student loan this month so I think we are doing okay... that's item number THREE off our debt snow ball for the year.

Everyone's budget is going to look different.  But here is an outline of the things that are in OUR budget.  I think going through and making sure everything (even the smallest thing) is on there is one of the most important things.

Home:
House Payment
Utilities/Gas
Internet
Cell Phone
Netflix/Hulu

Living Expenses
Food
Jake
Household Products
Gas
Haircuts
Daycare
Cleaning

Student Loans

Miscellaneous Payments:
Fun Money
Giving

Total Expenses:
Checking: Leave in X amount
Cash: Need X amount

Savings
Debt Snowball
Emergency Fund
Future Purchases
                      Haircuts $ /month
                      Oil Changes $ /month
                      Vacation $ /month
                       Home Repairs $ /month
                       Registration for Cars       $/month
                       Insurance $ /month
                       Gifts $ /month

Thinks that are highlighted in yellow are things that we pay cash for... ALSO one of the most important steps we took towards getting out of debt.  Once the cash is gone, we are done spending things in that category or those things come out of our fun money (unless we completely forgot to budget for a big purchase item-case in point, buying things to babyproof the house).

The Future Purchases under Savings are things that come up throughout the year but we budget for the entire year.  So for example if we spent $1200 on gifts throughout the year, we would put $120 into that category a month.  And then when we buy a gift, the money is there and we just deduct it from there.  Makes birthdays and holidays a lot less stressful.

So there it is--our budget and paying cash.  Two years, 1 month in and we have already paid off half of our debt that we had.  Progress!

Good-bye September!

Does anyone else just feel like doing a happy dance because September is over? For some reason it just seemed like the month that would never end!

Work just seems to be a drag for everyone lately. The people who do their job well get more put on their plate and the people who don't do their job or don't do it well seem to get away with it. I know it has really been frustrating me lately and I see the frustration in some of my favorite co-workers too! I try to start each week with a positive attitude but it seems like something happens within the first hour that sends my good mood right back into the toilet. So I am hoping a new month will help with that!

I made a Target trip with just Lucas and I this weekend so what I could get was limited since the baby was taking up most of the cart but I did have to make room for this:

Apple pie bagels and pumpkin spice peanut butter- yum yum! Perfect fall combo and I recommend it to everyone!

So here's to October- new month, hopefully a new attitude and all the pumpkin flavored food I can get my hands on!

#Runningforacause

Well the results are in... And I totally PRed my 5K yesterday! My sister in law and I agreed that we were going to take it slow up the hill of death (ok that's just my name for it) which was forced on us because we were behind a bunch of slow people and there was no getting around them the first quarter mile. But after that, there was no slow.

So cross off my new year's goals of getting a 30 minute 5K! Adding another bib to the plaque.

Considering I hadn't run in 2 weeks, I was pretty proud of this one!  Now to keep motivated now that I don't have a race in the future..

Photo Dump

What do you do when your precious baby wakes you up at the crack of dawn? You blog of course. While trying to keep his little fingers occupied as he tries to rip your pump parts out of the machine.  So actually you come back 9 hours later to finish the post.

I had a terrible cold at beginning of week and have been playing sleep catch up as much as you can with a 6 month old who doesn't quite sleep through the night yet and wakes up at 5:30 (in his defense he does go to sleep between 6:30-7.

Here are the random photos I have gathered this week.

Got these at Target- save your money and just buy a jar of peanut butter and some pretzels. The fancy container is convenient but not worth it :)

Chicken pesto in the crockpot! Cook chicken on high for 3-4 hours and then add a cup of sour cream and three fourths cup pesto for last 30 minutes. Had I thought ahead, I would have cooked some pasta to go under it and used some of the remaining sauce. But will delicious and easy! Recipe here!

Apple pie and pumpkin spice gum.... I had a long debate about trying it but decided not to.

Still on the search for the caramel apple and pumpkin pie Oreos. If anyone buys me a box, I will pay you back and be how best friend for life... Or until someone else gives me something cool.

First official 5k tomorrow since one year ago... Just going out for a fun run. No time pressures, no goals. Just finish and have fun!

Cleaning out my makeup bag

Well I would have liked to do this in June, but I finally cleaned out my makeup bag. The hardest part was getting rid of all my brushes. I've created quite the collection over the past couple years and it was time for new ones...

I bought two new brushes from Bare Minerals to replace my favorite eye shadow brush that had a 2 for 1 style. It was my favorite brush and very hard to part with, especially when I couldn't get an exact replacement. I ended up getting their full tapered shadow brush and crease defining brush.  The tapered brush was the exact same as my old one but I just picked up another brush at Target today to replace the crease defining brush- it was not what I was looking for.
So this is what I am down to. Origins tinted moisturizer and eye brightening and depuffing cream, Clinique toner (which still needs to be replaced but I'm probably done with bronzer for the season), Bare Minerals Enjoy Fate eye shadow combo which came free with the brushes (thank God since they cost more than I was ready to pay), and Lash Blast mascara... Not organic but I love it so much.

I am pretty simple when it comes to makeup.

My other beauty products:

Love my Origins foaming face wash and toner and depuffing roller. When I don't use my Origins moisturizer because I don't want the tint, I use Olay with SPF.

I am just glad to be able to cross that off my yearly to do list- 3 months late :)

Fall TV Schedule

So as previously stated, I am a TV addict.  I have gotten 100 times better since Mike has started making fun of me on a regular basis and 200 times better since having Lucas and having almost no time to watch TV.  So tonight's bedtime pumping activity was something that I used to do religiously every fall and didn't even think about doing this fall until I saw on Facebook that the Biggest Loser premiered tonight.  So here is my "Fall TV Schedule".  Do I think I am going to have time to watch all these shows?  Absolutely not.  But this is what I would have been watching last year.. until I decided all the new shows were dumb and went back to my favorites.  Previously watched shows are a different font.  The numbers behind the show are the premiere date.

Don't say I never gave you guys anything... Ha.

Things I Tried Tuesday

Can I just say how happy it makes my heart when I get texts from readers on things I should try? On the list of things that I am on the lookout for are Caramel Apple and Pumpkin Pie Oreos and test Pillsbury pumpkin cookies.. I love all things fall (except the colder weather and start of my job again- just kidding on one of those...)

I don't always just try food products. I've always heard rave reviews about these wipes but with smells like grapefruit, blueberry and carrot I could never get on the bandwagon. But coconut?!? I can definitely do that.

Unfortunately my skin was a little too sensitive for these wipes. I am hoping it will get better because I love the smell and how clean they made my skin feel but they left it a little irritated the first try.

I am a big fan of the idea of salads but I am not one who is going to throw a good one together myself. So I was excited to find these Dole companions for a reasonable price. I tried two different kinds (failed to get a pic of the first) and they were pretty good. I divided it into two servings and I had plenty of toppings and dressing.

I meant to talk about this yogurt when I did my huge yogurt review a couple weeks ago BUT I forgot it in the fridge at one of my districts so I left a friend eat it for me. I managed to pick myself up another one (Hy-vee find) and we both agree- it's amazing. Its dessert in yogurt form!

Lucas had his 6 month checkup today after turning 6 months yesterday. He did great and a full update will be on his blog in the next day or two.

What I ate on Wednesday- Friday edition

Breakfast was a bowl of this delicious cereal with a big coffee!
Lean cuisine breakfast sandwich was second breakfast... Not such a fan I these. The English muffin gets a little tough.

I forgot to take a picture of the main part of my lunch until it was on the garbage- nothing special. Lean cuisine spaghetti and meatballs.

Side dishes included:

Yes to my favorite Chia seed filler and yes to the new slammer (they have a vegetable- fruit mix I need to try... I hate eating vegetables by themselves) and NO to Honest root beer unless you like diet root beer- tastes about the same.

Driving home I am ashamed to admit I ate an entire bag of jerky!

And somewhere in there I also had some pumpkin yogurt... Mike almost died when he saw the price ($2 something a container) but it's so good!

Supper was a Pinterest recipe... Cheeseburger Sliders. Definitely a good one! Just put a pound of hamburger in a small baking dish, bake 25 minutes at 400 degrees, drain the fat and put some cheese on and bake for another 5 minutes. Cut into four patties and enjoy!

I also snacked on some homemade salsa and chips that my mom dropped off with my burger- delicious!

Hope everyone is gearing up for a fun and fabulous weekend!

BLK water... More like Bleh water

I have to admit, I got very excited when I found BLK water on clearance at Target. As a big Real Housewives of New Jersey fan (the company is featured a lot), I have always wanted to try it.

Yah.... Not so good. It tasted like watered down fruit punch. Glad I didn't pay full price!

Something that IS worth paying the full price (and then some for) is this cereal.

It's amazing... And probably not good for you at all.

And finally, another "Lunchable" type food... Only a gourmet version of it ;) thank you Target.

That's all I have for now. I bought a lot more but since we just hit up Target yesterday, this is all I've had the opportunity to try so far.

Today was Lucas' first day of daycare... We all survived. I will hopefully have full details up on his blog in the next day or so. For now, here is a picture his daycare provider sent me. Enjoy!

Wake me up when September ends...

Good morning!

Hope everyone had a fabulous Labor Day. I spent the weekend at home snuggling my baby since tomorrow is D day. That's D for Daycare. Pray for me. Want to see what else Lucas is up to?
Lovingonlucas.wordpress.com

Well it's September. How the **** did THAT happen? Somehow even though I've been back at work for 3 weeks, admitting its September seems like the official end of summer. Boo. However it does mean that fall is here and that means fall colors and pumpkin everything. And since Mike wouldn't let me have a Pumpkin Spice Latte last year because I was pregnant and our doctor was pretty adamant I didn't drink caffeine (that lasted 12 weeks... If he gets ADHD, I will deal with it. But I would have been fired if I hadn't gotten my caf fix) so you better believe I will be hitting up every Starbucks I see this summer.

The first of the month is also a great time for some monthly "to dos". Change your contacts. Replace your razor blade. And because it's the 9th month, replace your toothbrush! You are supposed to do it every 3 months so I do it in months that are a multiple of 3 so I don't forget when I last did it  :) You are welcome for that tip. I am also going to get around to replacing my makeup this month- I try to do it at the end of June and December (every 6 months) but I am having troubles finding organic products that I like... Damn those chemically infused products for the way their mascara makes me eyes pop!

Making a Target run today- hopefully I will find some new things to let you all know about. Along with 8 billion other things that are not on my list... damn you Target.

I will leave you with this photo. My husband takes about one photo a month of Lucas (I take about one photo an hour) and he thought that Lucas holding a bottle of Mellow Yellow needed to be documented... I don't understand men sometimes... Most of the time... Ever.

A new drink with an Italian recipe

So does anyone else have a board of "homemade Starbucks/Caribou/insert major chain here" on Pinterest? I know I do.  It's actually called my "No More Soda Project" when I thought I was going to give up pop but let's be honest, that didn't last long.

So I finally made one of the recipes.  You can find the link I used for the idea here.  Iced Passion Tea Lemonade.

What I did was make some sun tea.  Put four bags of your favorite tea in a container (this one was a Target clearance find) and put it out in the sun all day.  Definitely one of my favorite things about summer.  I used Passion tea which I would not recommend unless you are mixing it with something-- way too "flowery" tasting for me.

Then I put some in a glass with about 2/3 tea to 1/3 lemonade.  I usually end up going through 2 containers of lemonade to the one container of tea.  I wish I could have found the Minute Maid Light 15 calories tea but the local grocery store and Target did not have it... would have made it a lot less calories.  I put some sugar in there too just to make it extra sweet.  A delicious summery treat for half the price of Starbucks!

Another new recipe we tried was Chicken Parmesan Casserole.  A very easy recipe to make and good flavor-- we threw in pepperonis for a little extra flavor.  We did have to cut up and cook chicken breasts because I couldn't find any pre-cooked cubes at Target or it would have been even easier to make.

I love when my Pinterest ideas turn out good-- we have definitely had some fails in the past :)

Baby Step #2: Debt Snowball

Well since it's the last day of the month (which means we did our budget), it seems appropriate to do another Sunday Savings post.

So Baby Step 2 of Dave Ramsey's "Get out of debt" plan is to list your debts, smallest to largest, except for your mortgage.  And then you attack the smallest debt to pay it off.  Then you attack the next one.  And the next one.  And the next one...until they are GONE!  People call all the time and argue that you should pay off the debt with the highest interest rate but the idea is that you feel accomplishment when you pay off one debt and it makes you want to keep going and going and going... it's about behavior, not math. Which the school psychologist in me loves.

When we started the program, we had 7 student loans (yup, one for each year I was in school) and 2 car loans.  We were able to knock out that first car loan really quickly because we were only 2 payments away from paying it off in the first place.  Now 2 years later, we have 5 student loans left.  In a month, it will be FOUR!  And trust me, it does feel really good to pay one off, even if it's just a little one and it's got friends four time the size behind it.

I think just listing out our debts was the biggest eye opener.  I knew I had student loans but we were making the monthly payments and it was all good...until I realized we'd be making those monthly payments for the next 10 years... and then I got the paperwork on how much I paid in interest for a year.  Those things together really made me want to kick that debt out of my life forever... and I'm on my way.

So just take one small baby step to this baby step and think about your debts..write them down.. and go from there :)

WIAW- Mexican Chicken Crockpot Meal Showdown

Breakfast was the typical giant bowl of cereal. What was new is my coffee creamer- Girl Scouts Thin Mints flavored.

I'm not a huge fan of the cookie anymore so not sure why I decided to go with the creamer but it isn't bad. Probably not one I would go with again (a little too minty for my palette) but enjoyable.

Somewhere between breakfast and lunch I had a blueberry Chobani Oats.

After my previous post about Go Picnics, I had to have one for lunch. The Sun Butter one tops my Top 3 list.

My afternoon snack was some almonds, cheese and a handful of Cupcake Goldfish. And a regular Coke. Yum!

It was good but we had just made Crockpot Chicken Verde a few days ago and that recipe was a lot better. If I made this recipe again, I would cook it on low all day instead of on high for a shorter amount of time. I had to cut to with a knife instead of shred it with a fork because it wasn't tender enough.

Just realized I never had dessert after supper... There might be some chocolate frozen yogurt in my future....

Target Tuesday

So inevitably when I sit down to write a Things I Tries post, 90% of my products come from Target. So I went to Pinterest to find some funnies about Target and had to stop at 3... Search "Target e cards" if you are in search of more. They are all true about me!

I made a stop yesterday for baby stuff and only got baby stuff- but only because I had someone I didn't know very well with me and didn't want them to judge me!

So those of you who work with me know I am a big fan of Go Picnic lunches. Mostly healthy, organic, and easy to pack (but they are expensive). I did a small squeal when I found a breakfast edition.

But sadly it was a disappointment. I had to heat up the croissant because it was hard and I didn't care for the almond butter. So recommendation- stick to the lunches!

Another find that I got excited about was:

Every once in awhile when I am feeling like I have money, I pick up Applegate organic lunch meat. So I thought I would pick up this "half time" box. Now I thought it would be a snack box but when I saw the calorie count, it became lunch! It's basically an organic Lunchable. Which I don't mind because the 5 year old in me loves me a good Lunchable but it didn't meet my expectations of being a snack.

Last but not least my review of some more Chobani Oats yogurt. I have now tried the apple cinnamon, banana maple, cranberry and blueberry. I thought the banana maple would be my favorite (I even bought two, I was that confident!) but it turns out I don't like it at all. The cranberry was the winner, followed by apple cinnamon. Who knew?

That's all I've got.

Hopefully there will start to be some changes to make this blog more user friendly over the next couple weeks. I am trying to learn how to use different features and organize. But turns out that at 28, I am no longer technologically savvy. Just bury me when I hit 30!

Surviving your case of the Mondays

Is anyone else having a case of the Mondays? Maybe it's because Lucas was crabby yesterday (teething, gassy tummy and tired all at the same time... Time to start drinking again!) or maybe it's because he was awake for almost 2 hours in the middle of the night (so was his father who got kicked out of bed after waking me up for the 100th time sighing because he couldn't get back to sleep... I get it- you're up! I am not!) but I was just not prepared to go to work today. I also wasn't prepared for the work day I had... I don't think I did a single thing for my own job all day.

So I drag my tired body home only to be reminded that my husband has fire meeting at 7 and my mother in law is spending the night... Sigh. Time to make the house look semi- presentable and pray the baby sleeps long enough before getting hungry for me to shower and pump.

So yes, here I am at 8:16 pm still in a mood when I should be happy I get to sleep soon. So I turned to my phone to see if I still had any inspirational and motivating quotes and I found one... Whew!

I'm going to try to turn it around for what's left of my day. If you are having a case of the Mondays (Tuesdays... Wednesdays... All days....), I hope it helps you too!

First Phone Call From Heaven Review

Last October, my phone rang early in the morning and it was my mom.  My family has a general rule that you don't call between 9 p.m.-9 a.m. unless you have bad news.  With the words "Grandma's doctor says everyone should come now because they don't know how much time she has left" my world was turned upside down.  Sure, my grandma was having some health problems but most elderly people in their 80s have a couple.  As a long-time smoker (yes she quit in her 70s but the damage was done), she had what looked like lung cancer but the doctor didn't feel like putting my grandma through the testing was worth it because she was not going to seek the treatment.  As I ran over my garbage can, breaking my taillight, I spent the next hour frantically driving to the hospital 16 weeks pregnant.  Memories flashed through my mind about all the weekends we had spent with my grandma... the shopping trips that always involved a cookie/pop break, picking up the latest Nora Roberts or Danielle Steele book, her picking me up after work for a sleep over. Two days later we moved her to hospice.  I spent almost every night sleeping in her room and after she slipped into a coma, sleeping in her bed.  She picked our baby girl's name but then told me it didn't matter because I was having a boy (and she was right!).  I was there when she woke up after two days of being in what they thought was a coma and spoke to her.  Ten days after that first phone call she passed away... I was ten minutes away.  My heart broke, not only at the loss of a woman who was a second mother to me but at the loss for my unborn child that he would never know his maternal great-grandma.

I don't write about this to make people sad but to give you the back story on why I could not read the book First Phone Call From Heaven for a long time after I downloaded on my Kindle.  Just the title reminded me of my grandma and her passing was too fresh in my memory.  However, about a week ago I was drinking a Pepsi and thought of my grandma (we always had to find a place that served Pepsi for our pop break) and I wasn't so sad anymore. I still missed her terribly but I was able to remember a lot of happy things without being sad.  So when I looked for a book to read on my Kindle later that day, I picked this one.

I have to say I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to everyone.  Without giving too much away, people in a small town began to receive phone calls from their deceased loved ones.  Is it a hoax?  Is it real?  When news of these calls become known, it spreads like wildfire through the media.  Protesters and believers flock into the town, turning it upside down.  In the midst of it is a character named Sully who lost his wife and has a son who carries around a toy plastic phone waiting for a phone call from Mommy (yes, that one broke my heart multiple times).  That's about all I can share but it was a good, easy read with some philosophical thinking behind it, as are most Mitch Albom books.

The biggest thing that hit home to me is that when we lose someone, we always wish we could have that one last conversation with that person.  To say I love you, to say I will miss you, to say all those things that we took for granted we could tell them whenever we wanted.  Sometimes I need a book like this to remind me to say what's on my mind and to always let my family and friends know that I care about them.

Uffdah...that's about as deep as I can get tonight.  One more day of work and then two full days with my baby and husband-looking forward to it!
